Mahanoy council hears about chamber ‘Miracle on Main Street’ lighting effort
MAHANOY CITY – Mahanoy City Borough Council heard about the Mahanoy Area Chamber of Commerce’s ongoing effort to line Main Street in Christmas lights at Tuesday night’s meeting.
Dubbed the “Miracle on Main Street,” Chamber President Jeff Bowers said they installed two LED snowflakes at Main and Centre last year and now want to line the entirety of Main Street downtown with the lights.
Eleven lights in all would be needed and would cost upwards of $11,000.
Donations and sponsorships are being sought and information is available at the Chamber’s Facebook page.
In other business, council approved the demolition of two properties in the borough.
The buildings at 512-514 West Centre and 520-524 Railroad Street will be brought down by the cost.
Council also approved:
- the release of fire escrow funds for 136 East Mahanoy;
- a resolution for the transfer of Schuylkill Community Action funds for the Mahanoy Area food bank;
- a three-year extension for Frey & Co. to conduct the borough audit;
- the Mahanoy Area School District’s homecoming parade on Oct. 13;
- Trick-or-Treat night for Oct. 31 from 6pm to 8pm;
- the closure of Mahanoy Street in front of the West End firehouse from 5pm to 9pm on Oct. 12 for a fire education event;
- the private sale of the following properties
- 1027 East Centre to Wilson Barbecho for $1,300;
- 337-339 West South to Charlene Hauck for $1,879;
- 523 East Pine to Edward Bowles for $2,000;
- several handicap and driveway applications;
- the Halloween Parade, set for Oct. 29.
