Tamaqua home destroyed by fire; one flown

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - Firefighters work to extinguish a fire at a home on West Cottage Avenue in Tamaqua.
TAMAQUA – One person was flown to a local hospital via air medical after flames destroyed a home here overnight.
Fire broke out at a home at 266 West Cottage Avenue around midnight.
Smoke and flames were seen behind the former St. Jerome School, and a Tamaqua assistant chief arrived to find heavy fire at the front of the building.

Crews spent about two hours bringing the fire under control while fire police kept onlookers and media members a considerable distance from the scene.
The fire was declared under control around 2:00am, and crews remain on scene as of 2:30am.
One person was injured in the fire and flown via air medical, which landed at the Tamaqua Area High School, to a local hospital. Tuscarora Fire handled the landing zone.

A Rapid Intervention Team from Carbon County — including firefighters from Lansford, Nesquehoning, and Summit Hill — responded to assist Tamaqua Fire.
Also responding were medical personnel from Tamaqua, Lehighton, and Penn Mahoning.
