Large turnout for Mahanoy Memorial Day parade

MAHANOY CITY – A larger than usual parade was met with a large turnout this morning.
The Mahanoy City Memorial Day parade stepped off this morning at 11am and took two hours to make its way through the borough.
This year’s parade, the culmination of the 10-person United Veterans Org Parade Committee’s effort, featured four bands and dozens of other participants, including the “Tin Lizzies” from the Rajah Shriners.
Spectators lined Centre and Mahanoy Streets as the parade made its way from one end of town to the other and back again.
Led by the Mahanoy City Police, some participants included the Upper Schuylkill Marching Band, the Mahanoy Area High School Band, Schuylkill County Jeep Alliance, and more.
Local youth sports teams also participated.
As participants passed the American Legion on Centre Street, many took the moment to pay tribute in some way — the Mahanoy City Fire Department’s marching unit removed their hats, and the Mahanoy Area Girls Softball League’s contingent stopped and recited the pledge of allegiance.
