CASS TWP. – The Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville recently investigated a tech support scam which was reported by a victim in Cass Township.
According to troopers, the 66-year-old victim reported that, while using their computer, it “began to alarm, indicating that there was a computer virus,” with an error message directing them to call a tech support number.
The victim called, and was guided through a “virus removal process” by an unknown suspect, who told the victim the service would cost $400, at which point the victim hung up and called State Police.
“The public is reminded to beware of such computer scams in that criminals attempt to trick victims into calling and paying for services on their computers that are not required,” said the PSP media release, adding the scam is commonly known as the Microsoft Warning Alert.
