Shenandoah police officer recognized by township supervisors for rescue
SHENANDOAH HEIGHTS – At their monthly meeting Tuesday night, West Mahanoy Township supervisors presented a certificate of appreciation to a Shenandoah Borough police officer for his lifesaving efforts at a recent fire in the Heights.
Supervisors Chairman Paul “Pepper” Martin presented the certificate to Patrolman Mark Hysock.
“As people know, there was a fire up in the township, and this young man went into the house and saved a life,” Martin said.
Hysock responded to a reported house fire with entrapment in Shenandoah Heights on Dec. 22.
He immediately made his way into the home, crawling through smoke into the third floor front bedroom, where the fire was, and where an 18-month-old child still was.
Hysock rescued the child, made his way to safety, and the child was transported by Shenandoah EMS to the Shenandoah helipad, where they were flown to a trauma center in Lehigh County.
The fire remains under investigation.
In other business, township supervisors said they will be picking up Christmas trees the week of January 8.
Residents are asked to place the tree on the curbside.
If residents miss that window, the township will pick up trees every Monday until February after ash pickup.
Supervisors also approved a resolution establishing a fee structure for sewer enforcement work and sewage permits.
