SHENANDOAH – A project to reconstruct Route 924 from the Pattersonville/Brandonville wye to the borough of Frackville, including Main Street in downtown Shenandoah, has begun.

The stretch of highway from Washington Street to the wye, commonly referred to as the Heights hill, was milled recently and lanes have been shifted as a result.

PennDOT District 5 Press Officer Ronald Young told the Sentinel Friday afternoon that the lane shift, which includes the removal of the northbound passing lane, is temporary, and is expected to last until July 24, weather permitting.

“It is necessary to have long term restrictions there due to the nature of the work at the location (it includes some road base repairs) as well as the topography,” Young said.

The $5,500,999.99 project is being handled by H&K Group, Inc. of Skippack, Montgomery County, and involves the milling and paving of about 4.5 miles of highway in Shenandoah, Gilberton, Mahanoy, and West Mahanoy Townships, as well as the addition of new traffic signals and ADA compliant ramps, drainage inlets, guiderail updates, signage, and new pavement markings.

The contractor, Young said, is planning to work on the highway from the wye to the Gold Star Plaza this year, and the remainder of the Gold Star Highway to Frackville, including the Gilberton ramps, next year.

“The overall project is expected to be complete late summer/early fall of 2021,” Young said.

Most of the work will be done in daylight hours, though Young said any paving operations involving short term lane closures within Shenandoah borough are only permitted between 7:00pm and 6:00am on weekdays.

New traffic signals, Young said, will be installed at Main Street’s intersections with Centre, Oak, and Washington Streets, while signals at Lloyd and Coal will be updated.

Pedestrian devices will also be installed at Centre, Washington, Oak, and Gold Star Plaza, he said.
