Rabbits rescued from Cranberry row home fire

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - Firefighters battle a house fire on Old Cranberry Road in Hazle Township on Sept. 10, 2023.
CRANBERRY – Several rabbits were safely rescued from a row home fire in this Hazle Township village Sunday evening.
The fire broke out in the 400 block of Old Cranberry Road around 6:30pm and a second alarm was quickly struck as crews encountered heavy fire on arrival.

Hazle Township Deputy Chief Jason Zoshak said three homes — 445 447 and 449 Old Cranberry — were damaged in the blaze.
“Labor-intensive, high heat, zero visibility. The guys really took a beating in the first couple minutes,” Zoshak said. “We had the fire under control in about 40 minutes.”
Crews remained on scene for several hours extinguishing hotspots and a State Police fire marshal was called in to investigate.

Zoshak said all three buildings were occupied but a headcount of those displaced was not immediately available. All residents got out safely.
A Hazleton City firefighter suffered minor injuries, Zoshak said, and was treated on scene.

Several rabbits, the chief said, were safely rescued from one of the homes.
Responding were firefighters from Hazle Township, Harwood, Hazleton, Sheppton-Oneida, McAdoo, Freeland, Valley Regional, West Hazleton, Lehigh-Lausanne, among others.
