Pottsville man in stolen car leads police on chase, crashes in corn field and is tased
WEISHAMPLE – A Pottsville man led state troopers on a police pursuit early Tuesday morning through much of the central portion of Schuylkill County.
State Police at Schuylkill Haven said the man, identified as 20-year-old Devin Harris, of Pottsville, led Pottsville City police on a pursuit in Norwegian Township around 2:00am Tuesday.
City police lost him, and State Police spotted him on Route 209 in Tremont Township, driving at a high rate of speed in a 2006 Chevy Impala.
Troopers attempted a traffic stop, to no avail.
On 209 in Porter Township, Harris lost control and slid off the roadway, at which point troopers attempted to keep him off the roadway, again, to no avail.
He continued fleeing, heading north on Route 125 into Hegins Township, then onto Deep Creek Road into Barry Township.
There, Harris turned onto Weishample Road in the village of the same name, turning abruptly into a cornfield, where the pursuit ended.
Harris, troopers said, “failed to comply with verbal commands” and was tased before being taken into custody.
The Impala was reported stolen from Saint Clair, troopers said.
Harris was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge David Rossi on charges of receiving stolen property, fleeing or eluding, DUI, agricultural trespassing, false identification, and a slew of traffic violations.
He was committed to Schuylkill County Prison unable to post $50,000 straight cash bail.
