PHOTOS: Big Mine Run geyser near Ashland
BIG MINE RUN – Northern Schuylkill’s own geyser in this Butler Township village near Ashland is gushing today.
The geyser is a mine ventilation borehole from one of the numerous former collieries in the area.
Here, water gushes out of the borehole and the ground itself, flowing down into the nearby Mahanoy Creek and staining the ground orange.
The water often emanates a sulfuric scent, akin to rotten eggs.
These photos, captured by our photographer, show the scene Monday afternoon.
