One rescued from I-81 crash
MAHANOY TWP. – One person had to be rescued after their vehicle crossed Interstate 81 and descended an embankment Monday afternoon.
The crash happened around 3pm near the Burma Road overpass.
The vehicle, a Hyundai, had been travelling northbound on the interstate when it crossed over the median and the southbound lanes, crashing down an embankment on the other side.
Ryan Township Fire Deputy Chief Matt Morgan said the vehicle became airborne as it crossed the highway and struck a tractor trailer, which sent the vehicle clear over the guiderail.
An occupant, who was not wearing their seatbelt, Morgan said, was thrown into the rear seat of the vehicle and trapped.
Firefighters from Ryan Township, Frackville, and Delano utilized hydraulic tools and rope rescue techniques to free the injured occupant and get them up the embankment and to a waiting ambulance.
From there, the occupant was taken to an awaiting medical helicopter at SCI-Mahanoy by Ryan Township EMS and Schuylkill EMS.
State Police at Frackville are investigating.
