READING, Berks County – One of our local schools came home with some hardware after Tuesday night’s What’s So Cool About Manufacturing Berks Schuylkill awards ceremony.

North Schuylkill’s entry, highlighting Ashland Technologies, Hegins, won Outstanding Career and Technical Education Story.

The annual contest, hosted by the Manufacturers Resource Center, Allentown, allows students the opportunity to see and tour the operations of a local manufacturer.

The students then produce a video on what they learned.

In the Berks-Schuylkill contest, all three of our local schools participated this year, as they have the last several years.

Shenandoah Valley students focused on Cardinal Systems near Schuylkill Haven, Mahanoy Area checked out the local Blaschak Coal Co., and North Schuylkill visited Ashland Technologies near Hegins.

According to the contest’s website, teams of students and teacher coaches receive camera equipment, software, and professional guidance as they learn to script, record, and edit their video stories. The contest’s objective, they say, is to change students’ perceptions about manufacturing careers.

The Viewers Choice Award, which we told you about earlier this month, went to Blue Mountain, who visited Clearly Clean.

Outstanding Overall Program went to Conrad Weiser in Berks County.

Other Schuylkill winners were Tri-Valley (Outstanding Team Spirit), Minersville (Outstanding Career Pathway), and D.H.H. Lengel Pottsville (Outstanding Editing).
