Malfunctioning chimney draws fire response to Mahanoy home

MAHANOY CITY – Mahanoy City firefighters were called to a home in the borough when black smoke was seen pouring out of the chimney Wednesday evening.

The call came around 6:00pm for a reported chimney fire at 200 West Pine Streets in the borough, bringing firefighters from Mahanoy City’s five fire companies and Shenandoah’s Columbia to the scene.

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL – Light black smoke is seen coming from the chimney of a home at 200 West Pine Street.

Crews were on scene within minutes, and light black smoke was seen coming from the chimney.

Fire Chief Dan Markiewicz said the cause of the smoke was a malfunctioning chimney, not a fire, and the homeowner has to have the chimney serviced.

Fire crews were clear of the scene in short order.
