Mahanoy project explores, celebrates district’s diversity
MAHANOY CITY – Throughout the day Friday, the hallways of the Mahanoy Area School District were akin to a tour of the world as students explored the various countries and territories its students hail from.
It was the culmination of a week-long project seeking to highlight cultural diversity.
Superintendent Dr. Joie Green said homerooms in both the elementary and high school were assigned various countries where students have come to the district from and a facet of the culture to research.
Cuisine, dress, sports, and more were among the sections.
Countries included Ecuador, France, Brazil, Honduras, Spain, Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Guatemala, Jamaica, Egypt, and the Dominican Republic. Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, both American territories with distinct cultures, were also explored.
Hallways were decorated with flags or other adornments inspired by the country’s culture, as well as information about and examples of various facets of the culture.
Green said the project inspired a mural as well, which is currently being worked on.
