Mahanoy man falls asleep at wheel, hits state police car

MAHANOY CITY – A Mahanoy City man was cited for hitting a state police cruiser Friday night in the borough.

State Police at Frackville said the crash happened around 9:00pm on East Centre Street near 12th Street.

Troopers said Edward Sanchez, 55, of Frackville, was headed east on East Centre Street in a marked 2017 Ford Police Interceptor Utility when Eric Bettis, 44, of Mahanoy City, fell asleep at the wheel of his Chevy Cruze while heading westbound.

Bettis’s vehicle crossed the center line, entering the eastbound lane. Sanchez brought his vehicle to a stop upon seeing Bettis’s vehicle cross the line.

The Cruze struck the Police Interceptor Utility head-on at a slow speed.

Neither driver was injured, though Bettis will be cited for careless driving.
