MAHANOY CITY – Another tradition returned in full after an abridged version last year, the Mahanoy City Memorial Day Ceremony.

The ceremony began at 12:30pm at its usual location, Catawissa Street adjacent to the Veterans’ Memorial.

Hosted by the United Veterans Org Parade Committee, this year’s event was at its usual scale, including a performance by the Upper Schuylkill Marching Band, Shenandoah. Last year’s event was abridged because of the coronavirus pandemic.

This year, Lou Huber, Master of Ceremonies, recognized veterans lost in the past year, along with all others lost in the history of the country.

Mahanoy Area students participated by singing the national anthem, reading a poem, and reciting the Gettysburg Address.

Stephen Barrett, of the American Legion Riders of Mahanoy City, spoke of the sacrifices Schuylkill County’s veterans have made, and specifically how a county-based regiment stepped up during the Civil War to defend Washington D.C.

Rain moved in as the ceremony progressed, causing the speaker’s programs to disintegrate, so the ceremony was cut short following a 21-gun salute led.

Ten people are involved in the committee which organized today’s ceremony and Monday’s parade.

Tomorrow, Mahanoy City will host its annual Memorial Day parade at 11am, which Huber says will have four divisions this year.

  1. Kaylee, if possible, edit the article to include a thank you to program chairperson, Matt Jarrett, and the committee, whose downy hours and days of time getting the program together. Without them, the program would not occur. Glad you were there to put it in writing. Thank you. Mark
