Mahanoy dive team assisting feds in recovering firearms discarded in chase

ASHLAND – Members of the Mahanoy City West End dive team waded through the orange waters of the Mahanoy Creek along Hoffman Boulevard here Friday, seeking two handguns that were tossed into the creek during a pursuit.

Members of the dive team joined agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), along with local and state law enforcement in the area of Red White and Blue Autos.

There, the ATF said two handguns were thrown from a fleeing vehicle into the creek.

Just after 3pm, divers found one of those discarded weapons.

Two people are in custody, though no further details on why they were sought or why they fled were available Friday afternoon.
