Mahanoy City braves elements for tree lighting

MAHANOY CITY – Despite downpours, Mahanoy City residents huddled under tents and umbrellas as the borough’s annual tree lighting ceremony was held at Centre and Catawissa Streets this evening.
The ceremony, which included performances by Mahanoy Area’s music program and other talented youth groups, lit the borough’s Christmas tree at Veterans Memorial Park.
Santa Claus, originally slated to arrive via horse drawn carriage, instead arrived aboard the Humane Fire Company’s engine.
Mahanoy City Council vice president Francis Burke spoke briefly, before Santa entered the park, and, after a ten-second countdown, illuminated the tree.
Following the tree lighting itself were performances by the Mahanoy Area High School band and chorus, both directed by Allison Kline.
Following the band’s performance was the Mahanoy City CCD class.
The ceremony was sponsored by the Mahanoy City Social Club, as it has been since 1937, and the West End Fire Company provided lighting for the event.
Various holiday activities were hosted after the tree lighting, including photos with Santa at the Humane Fire Company, sponsored by Lamda Nu Sorority.
