MAHANOY CITY – Four blighted, collapsing properties in Mahanoy City will be taken down soon, after council approved their emergency demolition Tuesday evening.
Borough council approved the demolition of the four properties unanimously at their May meeting, held at the Mahanoy City Public Library.
The properties to be demolished include a duplex at 34-36 West Spruce Street, a row home at 112 West Birch, and a row home at 416 East Railroad Street.
According to the Schuylkill County Parcel Locator, 34 W. Spruce is owned by Chung Zian Ho, of Mount Carmel, 36 West Spruce by John Benedetto Jr., Hazleton, and Brandi Treichler, White Haven, 112 West Birch by Sutty Murphin Properties, LLC, of Casper, Wyoming, and 416 East Railroad by Jamella and Kevin Kearns, of Mission, Texas.
According to Mahanoy City Code Enforcement Officer Bill Killian, the property owners have been cited, and notices of violation have been given, though the property owners had not responded.
At 34 West Spruce Street, a notice of violation was posted next to the front door of the property, dated April 26 and posted May 14. The property, and 36 West Spruce, are visibly structurally unstable.
The projects will cost the borough $57,000 in total, according to Borough Manager Cindy Soley. The low bidder for the demolition projects for West Birch and East Railroad was Mr. Z Contracting, Shenandoah, at a cost of $12,000 and $19,000 respectively, while Kass’s Contracting was for the Spruce Street project, at a cost of $26,000.
