HS FOOTBALL: Spartans thrash Bears in first meeting since ’15
MAHANOY CITY – In the first matchup between two local squads in several years, North Schuylkill wasted no time Friday in showing its athletic prowess.
It took only two plays for the Spartans to find paydirt, scoring on a 69-yard pass play from Jake Hall to Tanner Walcavage.
That would be far from all out of the Spartans offense, or Hall for that matter, in the first quarter.
Two more pass plays, including a 55-yarder to Josh Chowansky, coupled with a run by Chowansky, would give the Spartans a 25-0 advantage out of the first quarter.
By halftime, following another big 60-yard pass to Chowansky, North Schuylkill led 44-14.
The second half would see the Spartans back down, scoring only once more in the game, leading to a 50-21 final score.
The win would mark the 100th by head coach Wally Hall at the helm of the North Schuylkill squad.
Friday’s matchup was the first between the two squads since 2015, when Mahanoy defeated the Spartans 17-0. North Schuylkill leads the series 19-5.
Next week, Mahanoy continues its opening homestand, hosting the 0-1 Hurricanes of Schuylkill Haven, while the Spartans have their home opener, hosting an 0-1 Pine Grove Cardinals squad.
