HS FOOTBALL: Mahanoy earns first win in resounding fashion over Panthers, 40-0
MAHANOY CITY – The Golden Bears entered Friday’s game seeking their first win on the season after a narrow loss to 6A Harriton and a runaway defeat in the Slate Belt last week.
In a game televised on cable access and originally set to be on broadcast TV, Mahanoy earned their first win in resounding fashion.
The Bears hosted a 1-1 Panther Valley squad at Alumni Stadium and quickly opened up scoring, taking a 14-0 lead out into halftime.
On the very first play of the second half, Colm McGroarty returned the kickoff 72 yards to paydirt. He followed up by nailing the point-after attempt, giving the Bears a 21-0 lead.
A long rush by Kyler Quick gave the Bears a 28-0 advantage in the 3rd.
Under 20 seconds left in the third, QB Levi Terry connected with McGroarty on a 60-yard touchdown pass.
In all, McGroarty scored five touchdowns for the Bears — two on the ground, two from the air, and one on a kick return — along with Quick’s score to give the Bears the 40-0 victory over Panther Valley.
McGroarty had 85 yards rushing and 100 yards receiving, while Quick had 84 yards rushing.
The Bears move on to host Catasauqua next Friday at 7pm at Alumni Stadium.
