Gold Star Highway paving to begin in Spring; traffic signal work ongoing
SHENANDOAH – PennDOT provided an update today on the ongoing Route 924 reconstruction project in Shenandoah and the surrounding area.
So far, PennDOT’s contractor, the H&K Group, has completed paving from the Brandonville/Pattersonville wye north of town to the Gold Star Bridge at the south end of town.
PennDOT Safety Press Officer Sean Brown told the Sentinel that the remainder of the paving project — from the Gold Star Bridge to the north end of Frackville — “will begin in the spring once weather allows and paving season can begin. No exact date at this point.”
Additionally, crews have been working to install either new or updated traffic signals at each intersection in town for the past few months.
New poles, signals, and lights have been built at Centre, Washington, and Oak Streets, which currently stand in tandem with the old signals.
“Our contractor is awaiting additional equipment for the signals before they can be activated. We are expecting this equipment to arrive mid to late January,” Brown said. “Once the equipment arrives, it will be installed and the lights can be activated. The old signals will then be removed.”
In addition to the new traffic signals, pedestrian signals have also been installed at the intersections which previously lacked them.
Brown also added that the turn lanes at Main and Centre Street will be marked by signage in addition to pavement markings, as they have been in the past.
The $5.5 Million project began in July.
