Frackville ceremony tells stories of memorialized veterans at Memorial Park
FRACKVILLE – The annual Memorial Day parade and ceremony in the mountain city sought, as usual, to tell the stories of the names inscribed on the war memorial at Memorial Park.
Beginning on South Lehigh Avenue Monday morning, the parade made its way north through downtown and beneath a flag displayed by the current and former Frackville ladder trucks.
Following behind at Frackville police car, a veterans honor guard led the parade, followed by the North Schuylkill marching band.
Members of Frackville youth sports organizations also marched in the parade, along with first responders.
The parade concluded at Memorial Park, where dozens of Frackville’s veterans’ names are inscribed on the war memorial.
Each year, Elaine Mykolayko researches names from the Frackville Veterans Memorial, and she shared two more of those stories this year.
The ceremony concluded with Sylvia Yonalunas reading the poem “In Flanders Fields,” followed by a 21-gun salute by members of the Frackville American Legion and the playing of Taps.
