Flames destroy Mahanoy apartments
MAHANOY CITY – A Mahanoy City apartment building was destroyed by fire early Friday morning.
Firefighters were called to the building at West Market and A Streets just before 7am.
As crews arrived, heavy fire was seen from a unit at 16 South A Street and a second alarm was quickly struck.
It took firefighters about an hour to bring the blaze under control in a firefight made difficult by two abandoned units and a collapsing floor.
As of 8:30am, firefighters remained on scene.
No injuries were immediately reported, and the cause is under investigation.
Assisting Mahanoy City firefighters were crews from Shenandoah, Ryan Township, Tamaqua, Girardville, Frackville, Englewood, among others, along with Ashland and Shenandoah EMS.
Units at 12-18 South A Street were damaged in the blaze. 12 and 14 were abandoned and 16 and 18 appeared occupied.
