Firefighters battle scrapyard fire near Orwigsburg

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - Flames and smoke rise from a pile of scrap at USS Achey near Orwigsburg.

ORWIGSBURG – Firefighters from around Schuylkill County spent much of the afternoon battling a blaze at a scrapyard in North Manheim Township near here Monday.

Crews were called to the U.S.S. Achey scrapyard on Second Mountain Road around 3:30pm for the fire.

The fire began as a controlled burn that grew beyond the control of its handlers, firefighters said.

According to reports on the scene, the remnants of trailers were burning.

Large plumes of smoke, visible from as far as Schuylkill Haven and Cressona, billowed from the scene as crews from Landingville, Orwigsburg, and Schuylkill Haven battled the blaze.

Crews remained on scene past nightfall as heavy equipment helped swift through the rubble and extinguish the fire.
