ELECTION RESULTS: MABS sale opponents sweep Republican ticket in borough; write-ins could disrupt Democratic race
SHENANDOAH – Three opponents to the ongoing sale of Shenandoah’s water authority swept Tuesday’s Republican primary, and the Democratic primary is not clearly decided Tuesday night.
On the Republican ticket, four people were seeking three nominations for seats on council.
Mike Uholik was the highest vote-getter on the Republican ticket Tuesday, receiving 169 votes. Appointed incumbent Joe Boris received 160 and Joe Gawrylik received 144.
Uholik and Boris have been outspoken opponents to the ongoing sale of the Municipal Authority of the Borough of Shenandoah, and Gawrylik is the husband of the sale’s lone official protestant, Donna Gawrylik.
Joseph Link Jr., received 74 votes, the lowest votegetter. Seven write-ins were cast as well
While there were only three people on the Democratic ticket, more write-ins were cast than any ballot candidate received.
On the ballot were incumbents John Thomas and William Selbi and former Mayor Michael Whitecavage.
The ex-mayor was the highest vote-getter with 119 votes received, followed by Thomas with 88 and Selbi with 83.
However, 175 write-ins were cast. Detailed write-in results were not available Tuesday night, so it is not clear who the write-ins were for or if they eliminate a ballot candidate.
