County demo program downs 36 properties in borough, council asks for five more

SHENANDOAH – Since a $1.4 Million grant was awarded to the county for its demolition program, 36 property demolitions have been funded in town, and the borough voted Wednesday evening to ask for five more, including a double-block apartment building that suffered a partial collapse last year.
The borough approved a five part resolution submitting demolition requests for 118 North White Street for $7,000, 412-414 East Arlington for $12,000, 323 Furnace Street for $10,000, 527 West Arlington for $12,000, and 529 West Arlington for $12.000.
The properties on West Arlington suffered a partial collapse last August. On Wednesday, the upper floors of the west half of the property were severely damaged.
According to borough council president Leo Pietkiewicz, the county demolition program has demolished 36 properties in town at a cost of $356,470 to date, including fire damaged properties on North Main Street, and North Union Street, and a set of nuisance properties on North Race Street.
In other business, Shenandoah Borough Council:
- Approved a request for bids for the removal of demolition debris at 422 West Cherry Street,
- Approved a road closure for Heritage Day on August 24,
- Approved can collections for the Shenandoah Valley Quarterback Club (July 19), the Friends of Brian Rooney (July 3), and the Lady Devils Basketball team (July 6),
- Approved the 2019 Shenandoah Valley homecoming parade for September 27.
