Borough woman identified as stabbing victim

SHENANDOAH – A borough woman was identified as the victim of Sunday morning’s stabbing on the southside.

Deputy Coroner Andrew Szczyglak identified the victim as 36-year-old April Mahmod, of 106 South Catherine Street.

Szczyglak said she was found on the neighbor’s porch at 104 South Catherine Street with multiple stab wounds, and was pronounced dead at 6:40am.

“She was actually trying to run to the neighbor’s house to get help,” Szczyglak said.

“They have a suspect,” Szczyglak added, referring to State Police, who are handling the investigation. “I do not know if he’s in custody or not.”

State Police have been mum regarding investigation details. Troop L Public Information Officer David Beohm could not be reached via phone, and referred to the State Police website in response to an email inquiry. No information was present on the website as of 10:30pm Sunday.

First responders were first called to the 100 block of South Catherine Street around 6:00am for the incident, and, by 9:00am, about a dozen police vehicles from Shenandoah, Frackville, Mahanoy City, and the State Police Troop L Major Case Team were at the scene, along with the Schuylkill County Coroner’s Office, conducting the investigation.

Police tape spanned the 100 block of South Catherine Street between Oak and Atlantic Streets, as well as around a home at 40 South Catherine. Sheets were hung over the railing of 104 South Catherine as well.

Throughout the day, state troopers and borough police officers visited homes and businesses throughout the southside and west end, gathering what evidence and information they could.

Investigators remained at the scene until about 4:00pm Sunday.

Szczyglak said a virtual autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow, and a full autopsy is set for Thursday morning in Dauphin County.
