Borough to begin recycling pilot program

SHENANDOAH – Shenandoah will soon have a recycling program once again, albeit a small one for now.

Monthly on every second Friday, the borough will pick up residents’ plastic bottles for recycling.

Councilman John Thomas said the effort would be the first step in bringing a recycling program back to the borough, and its success would be reviewed every 90 days.

“It’s voluntary,” Thomas said. “People need to participate or it’s not going to work.”

“We’re going to start off small because we’ve got to see if people are going to participate,” Thomas added.

Thomas said the borough hopes the money saved from tipping fees would offset the cost of the recycling program.

“If we get enough people then we can always expand to such things as newspapers, magazines, etc.,” Thomas said.

Residents who still have bins from the prior program are asked to use those bins. If not, an empty trash can would suffice.
