Aschman selected as seventh gov’t study commission member via write-in

MAHANOY CITY – The voters of Mahanoy City have given the green light to the process which could see the borough become the first home rule municipality in the county, by approving a referendum to form a home rule study commission and electing seven members to the board.
Six were on the ballot for the commission, meaning a seventh would have to be elected via write-in, receiving at least 20 votes.
Unofficial final results released by the county election bureau listed write-in candidates, indicating Anthony Aschman received 98 votes, the most of any write-in candidate.
The commission will study the current form of government for the borough and compare it with other forms, and, nine months after its election, will present a final report to the borough. If it recommends a charter, it will have two more months to draft the charter, which will be brought to a vote at least 60 days after.
According to a timeline presented by Matthew Domiles, advisor with the Pennsylvania Economy League, at a March council meeting, the final report will be due in November 2019, if the commission is elected, and the earliest a charter can be brought to a vote is November 3, 2020.
The other commission members are Thomas C. McCabe, Kenneth R. Soult Jr., Francis P. Burke, Kayla Henninger, Louis Huber, and Larry Levy.
