Phone scammer impersonates Schuylkill sheriff’s office

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL FILE - A Schuylkill County Sheriff vehicle is parked at Shenandoah's National Night Out in August of 2018.

ROEDERSVILLE – State Police are warning of an ongoing phone scam which impersonates our county sheriff’s office.

State Police at Schuylkill Haven reported that a Washington Township resident received a voicemail Tuesday afternoon from someone claiming to be a Sergeant Jeremy Talon of the Schuylkill County Sheriff’s Office, alleging the resident had an arrest warrant.

Troopers said the information regarding the warrant was fraudulent and the person had no warrant.

The scam attempt is similar to others which attempt to get confidential or bank details from a victim to fraudulently transfer money to the scammer.

Other attempts had been reported to the sheriff’s office and State Police, troopers said, and the scammers seem to use Internet-generated phone numbers with local-to-their-victim area codes. In Tuesday’s case, the call came from a 570-487 number.

The actors spoke English with no discernable accent and played background sounds consistent with law enforcement radios or recordings.

Anyone with similar encounters should report them to their local law enforcement agencies. For Shenandoah, that would be borough police at 570-462-1008 or the Schuylkill County Communications Center at 570-462-1991.
