West Mahanoy holds line on taxes in 2023 budget

SHENANDOAH HEIGHTS – Taxes are not going up for West Mahanoy Township residents in the new year.

Township Supervisors approved the 2023 budget Tuesday night, keeping taxes at 7.15 mills.

Taxes have remained the same in the township since 2012.

The 2023 budget is balanced at $1,978,300.

Michael Michalik, township secretary/treasurer, said that $275,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funding has been allocated for projects in 2023. Those projects include drainage and road improvements in Weston Place, such as repaving Radio Station Road, as well as acquiring a new township truck and roller.

In other business, the township approved a $0.50 per hour pay raise for two road crew workers, bringing their base pay rate to $17.50.

Supervisors also approved hiring Destin Thomas as a part-time road crew worker at a rate of $10.35 per hour, retroactive to Nov. 21.

The township approved the 2023 meeting dates as well. Apart from January and May, supervisors will meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 7pm at the municipal building in Shenandoah Heights. In January, supervisors meet on Tuesday, January 3 at 7pm, and in May on Tuesday, May 23 at 7pm.
