Shenandoah Police Patrolman William Moyer was among the first to arrive on scene, finding a male outside the house and smoke throughout the living room area of the home, he said.

The fire was then upgraded to a working fire, and, moments later, crews from Shenandoah’s Columbia Hose and Rescue Hook and Ladder fire companies arrived on scene.

Columbia firefighters stretched a hand line and knocked down the fire in short order.

Shenandoah Fire Marshal Rick Examitas said the fire was accidental, a culinary incident, and the damage was contained to the kitchen area.

“One person was inside. The young child was upstairs sleeping,” Examitas said. “Smoke alarms activated, woke him up, and he came out of the residence, called mom, and a neighbor called 911.”

He said no injuries were reported, and he credited smoke detectors with saving the child’s life.
