Shenandoah’s three riskiest intersections, according to PennDOT crash data

SHENANDOAH – Only three intersections in Shenandoah averaged more than one crash a year over a ten year period, according to PennDOT data from January 2009 to December 2018.
In that same timeframe, there were only two fatal collisions in the borough, and another two skirting the borough line with Mahanoy Township on Route 924.
In total there were 211 crashes in the borough in that timeframe, with less than half causing an injury.
No single location in the borough averaged more than two crashes per year in that timeframe, and only three averaged more than one.
1. Gold Star Plaza and Gold Star Highway
The outlet for the Gold Star Plaza onto Route 924, the Gold Star Highway, averaged about two crashes per year from 2009 to 2018, according to PennDOT data.
In that timeframe, there were about 28 crashes in the area of the intersection. In the majority of those crashes — 22 — one vehicle struck another at an angle.
2. Main and Centre
Between 2009 and 2018, there were 15 crashes at the principal intersection in Shenandoah, Main and Centre Streets, averaging out to a little over one a year.
Six crashes at the intersection involved pedestrians, and four were angle crashes. None caused a severe injury.
3. West Centre and Gilbert
West Centre and Gilbert Streets, on the west end, had ten collisions between 2009 and 2018, averaging about one crash per year.
Eight of the ten crashes involved vehicles striking another at an angle. Two recent incidents were rollover crashes.
One crash resulted in a fatality, in 2017.
Ideas to improve the safety of the intersection have been tossed around at borough council in the past year, including changing traffic patterns or parking zones at the intersection, though no action has been taken.
