SHEPPTON – A portion of the central business district of East Union Township’s largest village will soon have sidewalks thanks to a state grant.

East Union Township is receiving $350,000 to install sidewalks and street lights on Center Street in Sheppton.

The grant is through the Multimodal Transportation Fund program and is one of three grants coming to our area, along with $500,000 to the City of Hazleton for streetscape enhancements on Wyoming Street and $250,000 to West Hazleton for the rehabilitation of Harvey Street, North Broad Street, and Park Circle.

“These investments are a big win for our communities,” said Rep. Dane Watro (R-Schuylkill/Luzerne). “Streetscape improvements in Hazleton, new sidewalks and lighting in East Union Township and road rehabilitation in West Hazleton will make travel safer and more efficient for residents and visitors alike. I was proud to support these projects because they strengthen local infrastructure, improve quality of life and help ensure our region remains a great place to live and work.”

“Upkeeping our roads and sidewalks is an important piece of building strong communities, yet these projects can be very expensive for local governments,” said Senator Dave Argall (R-Schuylkill). “I’m grateful this highly competitive state funding will not only make our communities safer but also breathe new life into our downtowns.”

The township voted to seek the grant last April. At the time, Dominic Yanuzzi, the township engineer, said it would only cover a small portion of a project.

The Multimodal Transportation Fund, the legislators said, provides grants to encourage economic development and ensure that a safe and reliable system of transportation is available to the residents of the commonwealth.
