BROWNSVILLE – An excavator is in position to take down another home in Upper Brownsville as a coal company is buying up and razing homes in the patches west of Shenandoah to expand a strip mine.

A double-block at 1303 West Coal will be the latest home in the Upper Brownsville section to be razed.

Keystone Anthracite is expanding their strip mine between Shenandoah and Lost Creek #2, which has involved the purchase and destruction of much of the latter village and Upper Brownsville.

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL – This double-block home, seen on April 18, 2025, will be the latest home to be demolished to make way for an ever-expanding strip mine. Several homes along West Penn Street, in the background, have already been razed.

The Girardville-based coal firm is asking West Mahanoy Township to abandon the portion of West Penn Street in Upper Brownsville where they’ve razed several homes.

A portion of the street is already blocked off by cones, though township supervisors tabled the matter at April’s regular meeting.
