Borough police pick up man on bench warrant at Boyer’s, find he swiped two tubs of ice cream
SHENANDOAH – A West Centre Street man wanted on a bench warrant had two stolen tubs of Breyer’s Ice Cream hidden under his shirt, according to a criminal complaint filed by Shenandoah Police.
Shawn Grady, 48, of 222 West Centre Street, is facing a felony retail theft charge along with drug possession charges after he was picked up on a bench warrant Tuesday.
According to the criminal complaint filed by Patrolmen Mark Hysock and Cody Applegate, the officers were on patrol around 1pm in the area of Boyer’s Food Market on West Centre Street when they saw Grady walking through the parking lot.
The officers told the court that they knew he had an active bench warrant, confirmed such with the county communications center, and made contact with him.
Grady was promptly taken into custody and searched.
Officers found two quarts of Breyers vanilla ice cream hidden under his shirt along with drug paraphernalia including pieces of tinfoil with burn marks and a short straw with powder residue and ziploc baggies containing a white powdery substance.
After the search, Grady denied that the ice cream was from Boyers, but rather from Family Dollar, and couldn’t provide a reciept.
Police questioned Boyer’s staff, who confirmed Grady visited the store and checked the ice cream aisle, where two quarts appeared to be missing.
The ice cream was worth $10.98 together.
Police also checked with Family Dollar staff, who confirmed he did not visit the store.
A field test of the white powdery substance indicated it was fentanyl.
Grady, police said, also had two previous retail theft convictions. A third and subsequent retail theft charge is a felony.
Grady was arraigned and committed to Schuylkill County Prison, unable to post 10% of $10,000 bail.
A preliminary hearing is set for Dec. 7.
