Gilberton mayor announces intent to resign at end of August

GILBERTON – At the end of August, Gilberton will be seeking a new mayor, as the current one is set to move out of town.
Mayor Michael Van Allen made the announcement at Thursday’s regular meeting of borough council.
He said that he will be moving out of the borough at the end of August, and will no longer be able to serve as mayor, so he will resign effective August 31.
Van Allen was appointed mayor in November of 2020 after Mary Lou Hannon’s passing, and won his re-election bid in 2021. His term expires in 2025.
Prior to his appointment, he served as council vice president. He said he was first appointed to council in 2005 and served off-and-on in the borough since then.
“I have tried to serve the people in my best capacity. I wish you all the very best,” Van Allen said, thanking all who he has served with.
Borough Solicitor Paul Domalakes said that council has 30 days to fill the position once it becomes vacant, which will be on August 31.
