Write-ins fall short in Democratic primary for Shenandoah council
SHENANDOAH – Three write-in challengers fell short of defeating any of the ballot Democrats in the primary for Shenandoah borough council.
Three seats on council are up for election this year and only three people were on the Democratic primary ballot: incumbents William Selbi and John JT Thomas and former mayor Michael Whitecavage.
Whitecavage received 119 votes, Thomas received 88, and Selbi received 83.
More write-ins were cast than votes for any of those ballot candidates, with 175 write-ins total.
However, according to the full results published by the Schuylkill County Election Bureau this week, no write-in challenger earned enough votes to eclipse a ballot candidate.
Three write-in challengers received the majority of the write-ins: Joseph Boris, Joe Gawrylik, and Mike Uholik. Those three were ballot candidates on the Republican side of the primary and are challengers of the pending sale of the Municipal Authority of the Borough of Shenandoah (MABS).
Boris is also an appointed incumbent on council, filling the remainder of the late Eileen Burke’s term.
Uholik received 59 votes, while Gawrylik received 55, and Boris received 54.
