SHENANDOAH – A winter weather advisory is in effect until 1pm Monday as 3-5 inches of snow are expected in elevations above 1500 feet, like Shenandoah Heights, Delano, Frackville, and Hazleton.
Accordingly, the City of Hazleton has enacted a snow ban and the Hazleton Area School District is on a two-hour delay for Monday.
Parking is prohibited in the mountain city where yellow signs or blue “Odd Season” snow ban signs are posted.
The National Weather Service at State College said 1-2 inches are expected in the valleys in Schuylkill and Columbia Counties, with 3-5 inches in points above 1500 feet of elevation.
Wind gusts as high as 35mph are also expected.
The advisory went into effect at 8pm.
“Plan on slippery road conditions especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated or secondary roads,” the weather service said. “The hazardous conditions may impact the Monday morning commute.”
“Rain will change to wet snow from the hilltops down into the valleys overnight,” they added. “The heaviest snow will occur overnight into the predawn and morning commute hours as temperatures fall into the low 30s.”
The National Weather Service at Binghamton issued a similar advisory for Luzerne County that goes into effect at 10pm Sunday until 1pm, expecting 1-4 inches in the valleys and 3-7 inches above 1500 feet.
Locations above 1500 feet of elevation in our area, according to USGS topographical maps, include Shenandoah Heights, Sheppton, Hazleton, Aristes, Frackville, and Delano.
