Where to find free lunches for children in Northern Schuylkill
SHENANDOAH – With schools closed for an extended period of time, some schools and community organizations have stepped up to fill the void left by the lack of school lunches.
The following is a compilation of where such lunches are being served in and around our area.
Shenandoah
Grab and go lunches, featuring a sandwich, fresh fruit, vegetables, and a milk carton, will be distributed at the Elementary School entrance on Elementary Road from 11:30am to 12:30pm beginning this Wednesday, March 18.
Mahanoy Area
The Mahanoy Area School District will serve lunches to people 18 years old or younger at two locations in the Mahanoy community, one on each end of town.
One location is the Mahanoy Area Transportation Parking Lot, where the former grocery store stood on the west end of town, and the other is East End Park.
The lunches will begin March 18, and will be served from 11:30am to 12:30pm.
Like Shenandoah Valley, the lunches will be of a grab-and-go style, and “there will be no congregating to eat.”
The free lunches are open to all children, not just Mahanoy Area students.
Ringtown
In Ringtown, St. John’s Lutheran Church, in partnership with St. Paul’s Church, the Ringtown Rotary, and Ringtown Food Pantry, will provide lunches for school children Monday through Friday.
The lunches will be distributed from 11:30am to 12:30pm at St. John’s Church in Ringtown and are take-out only.
The church asks attendees to call 570-889-3755 or 1-973-906-9636 prior, to help the church know how much to prepare, though it is not required.
Mount Carmel
Student lunches and breakfasts will be provided by the Mount Carmel Area School District beginning March 17.
The breakfasts are for the following day, and the meals can be picked up at the cafeteria lobby of the Mt. Carmel Area Elementary Center between 10:30am and 12:30pm.
The distributions will continue each day through the closure.
Students must be present to get a meal, and all children within the district qualify up to age 18.
