West Mahanoy Township Supervisors Recap

SHENANDOAH HEIGHTS – The West Mahanoy Township Board of Supervisors held its May meeting on Tuesday night. The meeting was originally scheduled for May 16, but was postponed due to the primary election.

Present were: Dave Lukashunas, Chairman; Joe Sweeney, Supervisor; Paul “Pepper” Martin, Supervisor; James Amato, Solicitor; Marvin Livergood, Police Chief; and Michael Michalik.

The meeting began with a pledge of allegiance, followed by the Treasurer, Fire, Police, and Code reports.

​​”For the month of April, there were a total of 167 calls handled by the West Mahanoy Township Police Department. Monthly Highlights: The police received a donation of first aid equipment from the Lost Creek Community Ambulance and the Shenandoah Community Ambulance. Both vehicles are equipped with better first aid kits.” Livergood said in the police report.

Also noted at the meeting, township supervisors received a letter from PennDOT regarding drainage issues in Shenandoah Heights. 

“We received a letter from William Klementovich from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in response to the last meeting we had concerning some drainage issues here in Shenandoah Heights. We had met with them on the Schuylkill Avenue area, proceeded down to the lower area where the new intersection was built several years ago. So, on that meeting, they sent us a report back, there will be some work in progress with them. We did discover some other issues that they found, as part of the basin where water comes off the mountain. Part of the basin had actually deteriorated, causing a collapse in that area. So, they are going to be working on different areas in that spot.” Lukashunas said at the meeting.

The township supervisors also congratulated the Shenandoah Valley Drama Club for their achievements in winning 7 awards at the Majestic Awards in Pottsville, including Best Overall Production.

“If you read the Evening Herald this morning, they had a nice write-up, they were the winners for the play they put on, Phantom of the Opera. I’d like to congratulate them, and also all people here in West Mahanoy Township. I thought that was very well done.” Sweeney said.

“It’s something to be proud of, because I know, down at the district itself, which I’m involved with, I see these kids in there and I see the hours they put in there, I mean hours like you can’t believe, and it’s something to be very very proud of. They did a great job, and if we could have students like that doing the work like that, their future is great.” Lukashunas said.

“That was the first time they ever won that award, and they competed against all the schools in Schuylkill County. Now that’s a little school in Shenandoah beating the bigger schools, that’s something to be proud of. And the director of the play, I’d like to especially thank her for a job well done.” Sweeney added.

In other business, township supervisors:

• Approved a motion to advertise Ordinance 2017-1, amending the zoning ordinance related to livestock
• Approved a motion to advertise Ordinance 2017-2, amending the stop sign ordinance.
• Approved a request from Rodney Davidson to consolidate his property at 127-129 Line Street, Altamont.
• Noted that a bicycle rodeo will be held on June 10 between 10am and 2pm in Altamont.
• Noted that on June 16 and 17, Green Street in Altamont will be closed for a block party.
• Noted they received a letter from William Kirwan Esquire regarding a request to transfer a liquor license from the Clarion House, Saint Clair to the Exxon convenience store on 541 Altamont Boulevard. A hearing will be held on the subject at a date and time to be determined
