SHENANDOAH HEIGHTS – West Mahanoy Township has a new full-time officer, and another part-time, after township supervisors approved the hiring Tuesday evening.

The township hired Theodore Buriak Jr. as a full-time police patrolman at a starting salary of $18.60 per hour with benefits.

Also hired Tuesday evening was Jack Buchinsky as a part-time officer, at a rate of $16 per hour.

“How many police officers are there in the township?” asked Evelyn Andrews, Altamont.

“Full-time? Part-time?” responded township chairman David Lukashunas.

“How many full-time?” asked Andrews

“Right now, you have three,” said Lukashunas.

“And part-time?”

“You will have three.”

Also approved at Tuesday evening’s meeting were the bids for the 2018 road program, specifically for equipment rental and for the Altamont Boulevard project, to repave the roadway from the end of what Schuylkill County repaved towards Frackville.

Two bids were received for the equipment rental, from Shoup Contracting at a cost of $22,410, and Franzosa Trucking at $16,920.

For Altamont Boulevard, five bids were received, they are:
Franzosa Trucking – $90,899.20
H&K Hazleton Site Contractors – $145,513
M&J Excavation – $106,564.16
Barletta Materials – $97,857.60
Pennsy Supply – $96,881.50

Township supervisors moved to award the bid to the lowest responsive bidder for both, pending engineer review.

In other business, township supervisors:

  • Approved a request to close North Lotus Alley, Frackville, for the the annual St. Joseph’s Parish Festival from August 3 to 5.
  • Retroactively approved advertising for a full-time police officer.
  • Tabled a decision to approve or disapprove the repository sale of a property on “East Wylam Street” in Altamont to Acorn Estates, LLC, for further investigation. Andrews noted that Wylam is a North-South street, which Lukashunas noted is part of why the decision was tabled.
