West Mahanoy hires new code enforcement officer
SHENANDOAH HEIGHTS – West Mahanoy Township has a new code enforcement officer, as supervisors retroactively approved his hiring Tuesday night.
The township unanimously approved the hiring of James Heffner as a part-time code enforcement officer, retroactive to August 21, at a pay rate of $14/hr.
He replaces David Zaleski, who resigned last month to pursue another career.
In other business, the township received notification that the North Schuylkill Landfill Association is planning to formally close the landfill facility near Turkey Run and dissolve the association.
The association consists of 17 municipalities in northern Schuylkill County and it previously operated a landfill near Shenandoah from 1971 until 1990 when new regulations from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources, predecessor to the Department of Environmental Protection, put the landfill out of business.
From then on, the association operated a transfer station near the landfill until that was sold in 2010.
In other business, the township approved:
- Eugene Coolbaugh’s completion of the probationary period as a road worker;
- A side letter agreement between the township and the United Brotherhood of Carpenter and Joiners of America – Eastern States Regional Council and its Local Union 431 affiliate;
- The MMO for uniform and non-uniform pension plans for 2024;
- The purchase of the following properties for $1 from the county repository for demolition:
- 1157 West Lloyd Street;
- 4 Newtown Road;
- 257 Mt. Olive Boulevard;
- 1157 Mt. Olive Boulevard.
