SHENANDOAH HEIGHTS – West Mahanoy Township supervisors heard from a convenience store seeking a liquor license transfer at a public hearing Wednesday evening.

Frackville Stores, Inc., is looking to transfer a liquor license from OIP in Frackville to the Exxon gas station on Altamont Boulevard in West Mahanoy Township.

It is at least the second time a liquor license transfer has been requested for the store since liquor laws relaxed to allow convenience stores to sell alcohol.

Attorney John J. McCreesh IV presented a case on the store’s behalf.

He said that the store will follow the requirements of the liquor license, providing food items and seating for 30.

“It’s mostly people grabbing some stuff to take home,” McCreesh said.

He noted that five Turkey Hill locations in Schuylkill County have a liquor license, including the location in Shenandoah, as well as the Redner’s Quick Shoppe in Turkey Run.

“There’s quite a few of them in Schuylkill County,” he said of similar licensed stores to the one he is representing.

The store is open from 5am to 10pm, he said.

Township Solicitor Jim Amato questioned McCreesh on some portions of the application.

Amato noted that Frackville Store, Inc., is a tenant of the building and asked who owns the building. McCreesh said 528 Altamont Boulevard Frackville, LLC owns the building. He did not have the officers of the LLC immediately available for Amato.

McCreesh said there is one other restaurant liquor license in West Mahanoy Township. Amato said there are probably three or four in a mile radius and asked how it may help with economic development in the area.

“I think it helps the store and the gas station stay in business and become profitable,” McCreesh said.

Supervisors took no action on the application at the hearing and are expected to vote on it at the February meeting.
