Water rescue at abandoned strip mine becomes recovery

GIRARDVILLE – Dive teams will be back at an abandoned strip mine this morning, attempting to locate a missing person believed to be in the water.

Firefighters were called to the “A-Hole” water-filled stripping pit just south of Girardville around 2pm Tuesday.

Girardville Fire responded along with dive teams from Mahanoy City and Schuylkill Haven, and a UTV from Englewood.

Police officers from Butler Township and the State Police at Frackville also responded.

Girardville Fire said the operations were suspended due to inclement weather and recovery efforts will resume Wednesday.

State Police are investigating and further information is not yet available.

The incident is far from the first at the strip mine and the nearby “B-Hole” stripping pit.

Multiple people have died at the two abandoned pits, including in 2021.
