Volunteers work to clean up town, bring community together
KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - Volunteers pick up litter along West Coal Street near Catherine Street on June 21, 2025 as part of a community clean-up.
SHENANDOAH – About 30 volunteers took to the streets of town Saturday as part of the Shenandoah Community One townwide clean-up.
The volunteers met at Shenandoah Borough Hall just before 10am for a briefing and split into groups of five and spread out across the borough.
Prior to the cleanup, Pastor Dale Weaver, of the Shenandoah Mennonite Church, led the group in prayer.
Organizers said the event is “about much more than simply picking up trash—it’s about fostering pride, unity, and education within our community.”
Members of Borough Council, along with Borough Manager Mike Cadau, took part in the clean-up and led separate groups.
Cadau said the effort is also an opportunity to bring the community together, “to connect with neighbors, build relationships, and show that mutual respect and fairness are the foundation of a strong community.”
Following the effort, volunteers gathered at the Columbia firehouse for food and refreshments.
Saturday was the second clean-up organized as part of the effort.
