Volunteers continue football season tradition in Shenandoah
SHENANDOAH – The Blue Devils kick off their season this Friday night, hosting Columbia Montour Vo-Tech, and Wednesday night, volunteers continued a tradition dating back over 20 years.
Since at least 2000, the town has shown its support for the Shenandoah Valley High School football squad by painting its football helmet at Main and Centre Street, and this year is no exception.
About a half dozen volunteers spent several hours Wednesday painting the helmet at the town’s principal intersection.
One of those volunteers, Brian Rooney, said the tradition dates back to Joe Ruth’s tenure as head coach.
A few years ago, when Main Street was scheduled to be milled and resurfaced during the football season, volunteers also painted a helmet at the base of Stadium Road, at West Centre Street, which has continued to this day as well.
Bill Moyer, another volunteer, said a soccer ball will be painted at the entrance to Veterans Memorial Stadium, as well, in recognition of the inaugural season of Blue Devil soccer.
The paint for each helmet and the soccer ball, the volunteers said, was donated by Lally Line Painting.
