Vine Street Park no longer considered as potential garage site

SHENANDOAH – The west end’s central recreation area is no longer in the borough’s crosshairs as they seek solutions for their rat-infested garage.

Multiple Shenandoah borough council members tell the Sentinel the borough is no longer considering replacing the Vine Street Park with a new borough garage.

A sewer culvert runs underneath the park which would preclude any construction, officials said.

Borough Manager Mike Cadau told the Sentinel Tuesday afternoon the borough was still evaluating its options for a new garage and the park wasn’t necessarily off the table at that point.

Shortly after, he relayed the same message, that Vine Street Park was ruled out by the culvert’s existence. Borough officials were at the site Tuesday exploring options and discovered the culvert.

Councilman Michael Whitecavage, chairman of the parks committee, said he is once again considering Vine Street Park as one of the borough’s parks and is exploring options to improve the longtime hub of the west end.

As for the garage, the current plan is to replace the 2006-built garage on Herald Road, borough officials said.

The garage, council said Monday, is infested with rats which caused significant damage to the borough’s trash truck.
