BLOOMSBURG, Columbia County – A Mahanoy man was recently named the recipient of the first annual Exchange Gallery Exhibition Award in Columbia County.
Jacob Ulicny, of Mahanoy City, a junior Bloomsburg University studio art major, was presented the $200 award during an art class at the university on Wednesday by Oren Helbok, Exchange executive director.
The award is given to a Bloomsburg student “who has taken the initiative to enter work in Exchange Gallery shows. By building a resumé while also supporting a local non-profit organization’s programs, the winning student demonstrates promise of building a life in art and as a community member.”
“The Exchange owes its ongoing success to collaboration like this,” says Helbok. “By specifically celebrating students who engage with our programming, we highlight the importance of the multifaceted relationship between Bloomsburg University and our whole community and live up to our mission of bringing the arts to all communities throughout our region and of supporting artists throughout their careers.”
The award was conceived by Bloom professor Chad Andrews.
The gallery said in a release that Jacob has entered work there since his freshman year, and “has impressed his professors with his activity in the life of the Art Department.”
Ulicny has a Graphic design concentration and won the award for “Most Avant Garde” in the recent Personal Adornment Day & Makeup Extravaganza (PADME) event on campus.
“I’m glad that he takes initiative, participates, and shares his work with the community,” said department chairperson Vince Hron.
