Two of Pottsville’s oldest fire companies to merge

POTTSVILLE – Two fire companies in Pottsville are merging.

The Phoenix Fire Co. No. 2 and Humane Fire Co. No. 2, both part of the Pottsville City Bureau of Fire, announced their intent to merge Tuesday.

They cite continually increasing pressures on volunteer fire companies as a primary reason to take what they call a positive and progressive step to serve the city and surrounding area.

“While there continues to be much work to be done legally, administratively, and operationally, the officers and members of both organizations are confident that this move will result in a more efficient and more effective service delivery model,” the companies said in a joint press release.

The merger, the companies said, combines the two oldest fire companies in the city. Both have histories dating back to 1829, a year after Pottsville’s incorporation as a borough. It later became Schuylkill County’s first city in 1911.

The Humane was originally the Pottsville Fire Company, organized in October 1829. The Phoenix traces back to the Schuylkill Hydraulian Fire Co, organized in April of 1829.
